Periyar: Self-Respect & Rational Dawn

பெரியார்: தன்மானம் மற்றும் பகுத்தறிவு உதயம்

At the dawn of the 20th century, பெரியார் ஈ. வெ. இராமசாமி ignited the Self-Respect Movement, dismantling caste hierarchies and championing rational thought in Tamil society. This era marked a profound reawakening, fiercely questioning established norms and advocating for social justice.

The Self-Respect Movement (சுயமரியாதை இயக்கம்), initiated by பெரியார் ஈ. வெ. இராமசாமி in 1925, emerged from his dissatisfaction with the perceived Brahminical biases within the Congress Party. Its core mission was the liberation of individuals from Brahminical dominance, caste-based oppression, and superstitious beliefs, fostering a society rooted in equality and rationalism. This movement's impact on modern Tamil identity is profound, having reshaped political discourse, social structures, and cultural self-perception. It laid the foundation for Dravidian politics and enshrined principles of social justice that remain influential today. பெரியார்'s declaration, _"சமத்துவம், சுயமரியாதை, பகுத்தறிவு – இதுவே என் கொள்கை" (Equality, Self-Respect, Rationality – this is my doctrine)_, encapsulates its core tenets. Our understanding of this period is robust, drawing from Periyar's extensive writings and speeches, as well as his influential journals like 'குடியரசு' (Kudiyarasu) and 'விடுதலை' (Viduthalai). These primary sources extensively document the social reforms championed, including inter-caste marriages, widow remarriage, and women's rights. ## Why this matters The Self-Respect Movement represents a pivotal moment in the Modern Awakening era, challenging established norms and advocating for a more equitable and rational society. Its legacy continues to shape socio-political dialogues, particularly concerning the eradication of caste prejudices and the pursuit of social justice within Tamil Nadu and beyond.
