The Three Sangams: Mythic Dawn of Tamil Letters

முச்சங்கம்: தமிழிலக்கியத்தின் தொன்மைக்காலம்

Legend speaks of three ancient Tamil Sangams (academies) in Madurai, nurturing literature and scholarship across thousands of years. While no archaeological or definitive historical evidence confirms their existence, these tales profoundly shape Tamil identity and literary heritage.

The concept of the Cankam, or literary academy, is rooted in Tamil oral traditions and later textual commentaries, particularly that on the *Iraiyanar Akapporul*. This myth proposes three distinct periods: the First Cankam, said to have thrived for 4,440 years; the Second Cankam for 3,700 years; and the Third Cankam for 1,850 years. These academies were supposedly under the patronage of the Pāṇṭiya kings, fostering an era of extensive poetry and scholarship. No physical artifacts, inscriptions, or archaeological sites provide definitive corroboration for the existence of these three Sangams as portrayed in legend. The earliest literary works known today, including the *Eṭṭuttokai* and *Pattuppāṭṭu*, are commonly attributed to the 'Third Sangam' period. Scholars often date this period between 300 BCE and 300 CE, recognizing it as the historically acknowledged Sangam Age. The significance of the Three Sangam legend lies not in its historical accuracy, but in its profound role as a cultural cornerstone. It asserts an immense antiquity and a continuous, vibrant literary tradition for the Tamil language. This narrative instills pride and a deep connection to a storied past, embodying the belief that "கற்றுணர் மாந்தர் பலர்" (many are the learned people). ## Why this matters Despite its mythic character, the tale of the Sangams remains a potent force in academic discourse and popular imagination. It highlights the enduring power of foundational myths in shaping cultural identity and aspirations for a long and distinguished literary heritage.
